A fine European silk and metal-thread embroidered drawstring purse, probably late seventeenth or early eighteenth century. Of elongated, tapering, panelled form with a rounded base, the cream ground embroidered in pink, crimson, blue, yellow and green silks with scrolling flowering stems, leaves and raised knotted flowerheads, he decoration incorporates large shield-shaped cartouche motifs worked in couched gold and silver coloured metal threads, together with smaller flower-filled vessels, with braided metallic edging, lined in green silk, with plaited green drawcords terminating in four pear-shaped metal-thread covered ornaments, each finished with a short green silk tuft, the main body 9 x 9cm Condition: Extensive splitting and areas of loss to the cream ground, exposing the green lining beneath, with loose and displaced embroidery threads in places. Wear and darkening to the metallic threads and edging, and fraying to the green silk terminal tufts.
