etsuke in deer horn with an exceptional patina and luster depicting a group of two cubs, with eyes in dark horn. Himotoshi under the base. ---The netsuke is in excellent condition. The most important netsuke collections are now outside Japan, acquired in the late 19th and early 20th centuries by European and American collectors, as the Japanese abandoned the everyday use of netsuke in favor of a westernization of customs. The ideogram of the Netsuke, composed of the kanji "ne" (根) meaning "root" and "tsuke" (付け) meaning "to hang", indicates the origin of this object. Initially, the Netsuke was literally a root or a cut piece of wood, hung from the obi, the belt that tightens the kimono. In the 19th and 20th centuries, the Netsuke became the quintessential collectible object, with pieces all different in subject, shape, and material, which intrigue and impress for their patina and for the miniature details, but especially for their tactile appeal. However, it is important not to confuse authentic Netsuke with the poor Chinese reproductions in bone or other materials, which can mislead someone approaching these objects for the first time.
