A desert of blood, endless and uniformly red, as far as the eye can see—and in the middle, abruptly, a bright area that interrupts everything. Not a single grain of sand here matches another; suddenly there is coolness, clarity, another element in the midst of the glow. This very image of an oasis is contained within this skull, and it is no optical accident, but the record of two completely different moments in the stone's formation. The deep red base mass owes its color to finely distributed hematite particles that, during the formation of jasper, settled throughout the pebbly rock—an desert that was soaked in iron-red from the very beginning. The bright area, however, is more recent: long after the red mass had already solidified, a second, nearly iron-free, silica-rich solution penetrated a crack or cavity in the already formed rock and crystallized there as pure quartz or chalcedony. Two events, separated by unknown spans of time, yet forever united in the same stone—the second flood that entered the first without mixing with it.
