A pair of Japanese cloisonne enamel vases from the Meiji period, featuring a rectangular baluster form with rounded shoulders and flared rims. Each vase is decorated with birds, including sparrows and finches, amidst the branches of a Japanese maple tree and flowering chrysanthemums against a midnight black ground. The neck and foot are bordered by geometric butterfly and foliate patterns in polychrome enamels. The interior and underside are finished in a translucent green enamel.
