Montepulciano “Kurni” by Oasi degli Angeli is a dense, concentrated, multifaceted and ever-evolving red wine from the Marche region, expressing the land, Mediterranean character and profound depth. The winery Oasi degli Angeli certainly lives up to its name. In this small, enchanted corner of the valley of the Sant’Egidio stream, Marco Casolanetti and Eleonora Rossi have carved out an exceptional agricultural haven. Here, time seems to have truly stood still, creating a bucolic atmosphere that evokes a bygone era. “Kurni” is born from Marco’s craftsmanship and Eleonora’s visionary spirit. Together, they have devoted themselves to vineyard management that respects the specific needs of a terroir characterized by poor soils. For this reason, the vineyards at Oasi degli Angeli are planted at extremely high densities, with bush-vine training systems. The sandy, stony soils provide excellent drainage while ensuring a consistent supply of water to the vines. In the cellar, fermentation occurs spontaneously, driven exclusively by indigenous yeasts, partly in stainless steel and partly in large wooden vats. This is followed by an extended 20-month ageing period in new French oak barriques. These are Oasi degli Angeli’s secrets for transforming Montepulciano into “Kurni,” one of the wines that has sparked the most debate among wine critics over the past decade. Critics have enthusiastically embraced its achievements, celebrating this enfant prodige as it ascended to the ranks of Italy’s great age-worthy red wines. Many have described “Kurni” as a transcendent wine: an intensely expressive nose of small red berries, spices and cocoa, accompanied by deep earthy notes. On the palate, it reveals sweetness, creaminess and dense tannins, followed by an astonishingly long aromatic finish. Yet none of this comes as a surprise. At Oasi degli Angeli, research and experimentation never cease. And so, “Kurni” seems destined to be born great, continuing to evolve through ever more exceptional and rewarding vintages.
