Cantalupo Anno Primo 2016 is one of the historic expressions of the Ghemme DOCG, a designation of Upper Piedmont deeply tied to Nebbiolo, locally known as Spanna. The Arlunno family, owner of Antichi Vigneti di Cantalupo, boasts a long winemaking tradition in Ghemme, documented since the early seventeenth century. The name “Anno Primo” recalls 1974, the year in which the family produced its first Ghemme DOC, giving rise to what would become one of the winery’s most representative wines. The grapes come from the company’s vineyards in Ghemme, in the hillside area at the foot of Monte Rosa. Soils of glacial and morainic origin, rich in pebbles and mineral components originating from the Alpine chain, constitute one of the distinctive elements of Cantalupo’s terroir. The harvest is carried out manually. After destalking and crushing, fermentation takes place at a controlled temperature, with daily remontages and subsequent maceration with submerged cap. The wine then continues its maturation for about 20 months in oak barrels, followed by a further rest in bottle. In the glass it shows a typical ruby red color tending to garnet. The bouquet is elegant and complex, with notes of violet, dried rose and raspberry, accompanied by balsamic hints of resin and licorice. On the palate it is dry, warm and savory, with well-present tannins and a long persistence. The 2016 vintage, already ten years evolved, makes this lot particularly interesting for those wishing to discover a Nebbiolo from Upper Piedmont already aged in bottle.
