2003 E. Guigal

2003 E. Guigal

Unique lot of 3 bottles of Guigal Côte-Rôtie 2003 in the original wooden box. La Landonne La Turque La Mouline 100/100 Parker. Located in Ampuis, the cradle of Côte-Rôtie wines, the Guigal estate was founded in 1946 by Etienne Guigal, who arrived in the region in 1923 at the age of 14 and helped to develop the Côte-Rôtie appellation. In 1961, his son, the young Marcel Guigal, took the reins of the house alongside his father, who was suddenly struck by total blindness. Today, the succession is ensured by Philippe Guigal, Marcel’s son, a brilliant oenologist and proud representative of the third generation. The vineyard also encompasses all the prestigious appellations of the Rhône Valley: Côte-Rôtie, Condrieu, Saint-Joseph, Hermitage, Gigondas, Crozes-Hermitage. They are all vinified and aged in the Ampuis cellars. Considerable care is given to all viticultural tasks: reasoned farming (certified HVE), entirely manual work due to the slope of the plots, vinifications in thermo-regulated stainless-steel tanks, aging in new oak barrels (up to 42 months for certain cuvées) to allow the wine to fully express its aromas, etc. The house produces three “prestige” cuvées - La Landonne, La Mouline and La Turque - a sublime triptych that enthusiasts of Côte-Rôtie snap up. In terms of heritage, the illustrious estate also stands out: the headquarters are located at Château d’Ampuis, a Renaissance jewel protected as a historic monument. Guigal is one of the most emblematic houses in the Rhône Valley, renowned for its unwavering consistency and its disciplined grape sourcing. From its exact name “La Landonne - Lieu-dit Cadastré,” the famous plot located on the Côte Brune gives rise to one of the Rhône Valley’s most prized cuvées: La Landonne by Guigal. It draws enthusiasts with the prestige of its origin, just like the two other legendary references of the estate, La Mouline and La Turque. However, the La Landonne plot is not the exclusive property of Guigal, unlike the other two monopole crus. Spanning two hectares, the Syrah is vinified by whole clusters and ultimately proves to be “the most Bordelais of the house.” The aging is around 40 months in new barrels. With remarkable aromatic complexity — blackberries, leather, licorice, roasted coffee, Oriental spices, etc. — La Landonne offers an exceptionally structured backbone without sacrificing the wine’s tannin softness. Its richness and concentration are matched only by an outstanding aging potential for a Rhône wine: up to 35 years in the best vintages. Note also that the La Landonne vines were planted at the birth of Philippe Guigal, which explains his attachment to this extraordinary cuvée. The Mouline parcel, covering barely a hectare, sits on the Côte Blonde and is undeniably the estate’s flagship terroir. This vineyard, wholly owned by Guigal since 1966, is remarkably old — around 75 years — with a southern exposure favorable to full ripeness. The vines spread over terraces in the shape of a Roman amphitheater. La Mouline benefits from a unique 40-month aging in new barrels and, above all, is the sole member of the LA-LA-LA trio to contain such a large proportion of Viognier (11%), which gives it a decidedly “Burgundian” profile according to Eve Guigal. With exceptional finesse and minerality, it reveals sublime aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry, and violet. While its velvety, silky texture makes it feel approachable in its early years, its aging potential remains impressive. La Turque is the youngest and rarest of the three Guigal Côte-Rôtie cuvées. The estate’s only vineyard in the appellation with constant sun exposure, Turque is picked as late as possible to achieve perfect grape maturity (Syrah and Viognier (7%) planted together on just under one hectare). After vinification, the wine rests in new barrels for 40 months. With a ruby red robe and deep highlights, the wine offers powerful yet delicate aromas of Morello cherry, blackberry, and Oriental spices. Possessing the vigor of Côte Brune, Turque also has the elegance and feminine notes of Côte Blonde. A wine of extraordinary richness, often delicious in its youth, with a substantial aging potential that allows it to develop a majestic suppleness. See my other listings on Catawiki
