2002 Château Margaux - Margaux 1er Grand Cru Classé - 1...

2002 Chateau Margaux, Premier Grand Cru. Double magnum, (Jeroboam). Level: in the neck. Capsule: excellent. Label: very good. The 2002 Château Margaux is a highly regarded Bordeaux red wine from the prestigious Premier Grand Cru Classé estate in the Margaux appellation. Born from a challenging but ultimately successful growing season, this vintage stands out for its historically high concentration of Cabernet Sauvignon (around 86% to 87%), resulting in a classic, structured, and elegant profile rather than an overly powerful one. Key Characteristics & Tasting Notes: • The Blend: Driven heavily by Cabernet Sauvignon (86–87%), balanced with small amounts of Merlot (7–8%), Petit Verdot (5%), and Cabernet Franc (2%). • Aromas & Flavor: The nose boasts classic Margaux notes of violet, cassis, black cherries, and licorice, intertwined with earthier undertones of graphite, tobacco, and light vanilla oak. • Palate: It is medium-bodied with a remarkably silky structure, crisp freshness, and fine, rustic tannins that yield a long, graceful finish. • Critical Acclaim: It typically commands strong scores from top wine critics, tracking around 93 points from reviewers like Jeff Leve and Neal Martin. Drinking Window. • Maturity: The 2002 vintage is fully mature and prime for drinking now. While it was initially projected by some experts to peak around 2025–2026, its exceptional tannic backbone means properly cellared bottles will continue to hold up beautifully and surprise drinkers for years to come.
