Bottled in February 2024 directly from the cask, after 60 years: 1964–2024. The bottles are in outstanding condition, with maximum fill level, a very clean pale-red colour, a new capsule and a clearly readable label. Fully mature and drinking beautifully now, it also has the structure to be cellared for another 50 to 100 years. A wine built to age for decades!! 20/20 Jancis Robinson: “Have you ever tasted a better pass of time? Do you know what long ageing tastes like? If you want to experience time in your glass, this is the wine you must taste. The Brotons 1964 Fondillón is a unique wine –complex, perfect and exciting. Personally, giving 20 points to a wine gives me a bit of vertigo. I do not want to enter into philosophical arguments whether perfection exists or not, or if a wine can be perfect. But, tasting Brotons’ wine, I ask myself a question: what can be asked of this wine to be better? Sincerely, I don´t know". This is not a solera wine: 100% of the wine comes from the 1964 vintage, a year widely regarded as one of the greatest of the 20th century in Spain. It was aged in century-old Spanish oak casks containing abundant sediment from previous ancient Fondillón wines, which the winery owners consider an essential part of the wine’s “terroir”. During the first two to three years, the wine was analysed cask by cask every two months in order to assess its ageing potential. It has remained in cask for 60 years, until now. Fondillón is one of Europe’s most historic wines, a unique 'Rancio' wine made exclusively from over-ripe Monastrell grapes grown in the region of Alicante. Unlike Sherry and Port, which are fortified by the addition of alcohol, this is achieved due to the naturally high level of sugar which is converted to alcohol during fermentation. In the 18th century Fondillón from Alicante was one of the most famous and prestigious wines in the world, it was more highly valued than the wines of Sauternes, Sherry and Port. It was said to have been a favourite of Louis XIV of France and Elizabeth 1st of England and would have been on the menus of banquetes in other royal households. It was mentioned in the writings of Dumas’ The Count of Monte Cristo’ also Shakespeare and Dostoyevsky, where it is called Alicante, as it was also known. The demise of Fondillón was a result of the destruction of the vineyards by the phylloxera louse in the late 19th century. *** All international parcels are shipped to the highest professional standards via premium UPS International Express, the courier’s fastest signature-required service.
