1912 Pattern Quarter Dollar. Uniface Obverse Electrotrial. Design

Unique and Intriguing 1912 Pattern Quarter Dollar Electrotrial By James Earle Fraser, of Buffalo Nickel Fame Judd-C1912-3 1912 Pattern Quarter Dollar. Uniface Obverse Electrotrial. Design by James Earle Fraser. Judd-C1912-3, Pollock-5175. Rarity-8+. White Metal. Plain Edge. Genuine (PCGS). Liberty head left, similar in some respects to that by Charles E. Barber seen on the regular issue Liberty Head nickel of 1883 to 1913, but less refined. Thirteen stars encircle the periphery, and the date 1912 is below. Several adjustment marks or similar as-made features on seen on the blank reverse. Both sides with uniform pewter gray color, and essentially as made. This obverse electrotrial is privately made, by James Earle Fraser, who is best known among today's collectors as designer of the Buffalo nickel, 1913 to 1938. As reported when we (as Bowers and Ruddy) offered this piece in our July 1981 sale: No pattern coins made from this design. Researcher William S. Nawrocki claims to have found an obscure reference in the Fraser files, of this as the design for a silver dollar. No plasters of this design in the Lepczyk sale. It is believed unique, and this is the plate coin for the type in both the Judd (10th edition) and Pollock (1994) references on pattern and related coinage, pp. 319 and 442, respectively, and is also plated on the uspatterns.com website. An intriguing piece for the advanced collector of Fraser's extensive and much-admired work. Provenance: From the Charles "Cheech" Litman Collection. Earlier ex James Earle and Laura Gardin Fraser estate; Fred Weinberg, Numismatics Ltd.; our (Bowers and Ruddy's) William R. Sieck Collection sale, July 1981, lot 2424; our (Bowers and Ruddy's) Michael Steig Collection sale, September 1982, lot 1813; our (Bowers and Ruddy's) Rare Coin Review, No. 44, 1982, p. 9; Dave Berg Rare Coin Investments, Ltd. The plate coin for the type in both the Judd (10th edition) and Pollock (1994) references on pattern and related coinage, pp. 319 and 442, respectively, and is also plated on the uspatterns.com website.
