1873 Pattern Trade Dollar. Judd-1276, Pollock-1418. Rarity-5. Silver.

Significant 1873 Judd-1276 Trade Dollar Ex Winsor-Eliasberg From an Original Pattern Proof Set 1873 Pattern Trade Dollar. Judd-1276, Pollock-1418. Rarity-5. Silver. Reeded Edge. Proof-65 (PCGS). OGH. Obv: A bust of Liberty faces left with 13 stars around the border and the date 1873 below. Liberty wears a coronet inscribed LIBERTY, and her hair is tied in a knot by a band of pearls. Rev: The inscription TRADE / DOLLAR / 420 GRAINS / 900 FINE is surrounded by an olive wreath, at the base of which is a scroll with the motto IN GOD WE TRUST. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is inscribed along the upper border. Softly toned in olive and mauve-gray patina with underlying cobalt blue iridescence enhancing the reverse periphery. Both dies for this elegant type are credited to William Barber. One of an extensive suite of pattern trade dollars produced in 1873, Judd-1276 was made available to contemporary collectors as part of six-piece pattern Proof sets at the price of $30 per set. The present example is actually directly traceable back to one of those sets, which first appeared at auction in S.H. and H. Chapman's 1895 sale of the celebrated Richard B. Winsor Collection. The set was acquired by J.M Clapp through that sale, went to Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr., and most recently appeared at auction in Legend Rare Coin Auctions' February 2023 sale of the Terra Pistacia Collection. The coins have remained together despite being offered individually in the past, which is also the case in this sale, and we sincerely hope that another collector will recognize the significance of this set by buying all six of the coins. In addition to Judd-1276, offered in this lot, the other coins in this set are Judd-1281, Judd-1293, Judd-1310, Judd-1315, and Judd-1322. Provenance: Ex S.H. and H. Chapman's sale of the Richard B. Winsor Collection, December 1895, lot 1135, part of a six-piece set that also included the Judd-1281, Judd-1293, Judd-1310, Judd-1315 and Judd-1322 specimens offered in this sale; J.M. Clapp; Clapp estate, 1942, via Stack's; Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr.; our (Bowers and Merena's) sale of the Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr. Collection, May 1996, lot 302; Legend Rare Coin Auctions' sale of the Terra Pistacia Collection, February 2023 Regency Auction 57, lot 10. PCGS Population: 6; with a single Proof-66 finer in this category. PCGS# 61561. NGC ID: 2A88. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
