1870 Pattern Half Dime. Judd-817, Pollock-906. Rarity-6+. Copper. Reeded Edge. Proof-65 RB (PCGS). CAC. Obv: William Barber's portrait of Liberty seated to the left with an olive sprig in her left hand, right hand supports a shield with ribbon inscribed LIBERTY in raised letters. A free-standing liberty pole with cap is behind the portrait, the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is around the border, and the date 1870 is below. Rev: The same design that the Mint used to strike regular issue Liberty Seated half dimes of the era. It is sharply to fully struck, as well, and expectably smooth for the assigned numeric grade. Impressive numismatic provenance! Provenance: Ex Edouard Frossard, May 1882; T. Harrison Garrett, to Robert and John Work Garrett, by descent, 1888; Robert Garrett interest to John Work Garrett, 1919, transfer completed 1921; John Work Garrett to The Johns Hopkins University, by gift, 1942; our (Stack's) sale of the Garrett Collection for The Johns Hopkins University, March 1976, lot 598; Paramount's session of Auction '86, July 1986, lot 1811; Legend Rare Coin Auctions' Regency Auction 49, December 2021, lot 404.
