1866 Pattern Shield Nickel. Judd-489, Pollock-577. Rarity-6-. Nickel.

1866 Pattern Shield Nickel. Judd-489, Pollock-577. Rarity-6-. Nickel. Plain Edge. Proof-66 Cameo (PCGS). CAC. Obv: Similar to the adopted Shield nickel design, but the date is divided by the ball of the shield and the motto IN GOD WE TRUST is expressed in tiny letters. The remnants of an errant T can be seen in the field slightly past the final letter T in TRUST. Rev: The Dutch 5 reverse. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around a laurel wreath with a fancy 5 for the denomination within. Delightful surfaces are virtually brilliant to allow full appreciation of razor sharp strike detail and bold cameo contrast to the finish. This Judd number comes in both thin and thick planchet varieties, although the present example is not attributed as either on the PCGS insert, which also does not include mention of the coin's weight. Provenance: From Legend Rare Coin Auctions' Regency Auction IV, July 2013, lot 355; Legend Rare Coin Auctions' sale of the Glorious Patterns Collection, Part II, May 2022 Regency Auction 52, lot 297. PCGS Population: 4; 0 finer in this category. There are no grading events listed in the PCGS DCAM category. CAC Stickered Population: 5; 0. PCGS# 388538. NGC ID: 29KT.
