1864 Pattern Liberty Seated Half Dollar. Judd-393, Pollock-461. Rarity-8.

Exceedingly Rare Judd-393 Half Dollar in Aluminum Only Two Known 1864 Pattern Liberty Seated Half Dollar. Judd-393, Pollock-461. Rarity-8. Aluminum. Reeded Edge. Proof-67 (PCGS). OGH. Obv: The same design that the Mint used to produce regular issue 1864 Liberty Seated half dollars. Rev: Similar to the regular issue design of 1864, but with the addition of a scroll inscribed with the motto IN GOD WE TRUST in the field above the eagle. This is the design that the Mint adopted for regular issue Liberty Seated half dollar production in 1866. Medium silver gray with frosty motifs and reflective fields. Sharply struck and aesthetically appealing, free of unsightly blemishes and absolutely choice for the grade, as such. As the uspatterns.com website notes: These and the other 'with motto' patterns of this date and also 1863 and possibly 1865 are actually restrikes made circa 1869 and into the early 1870s and were offered with restrikes of the other denominations in complete sets. These sets were either in silver, copper, nickel, or aluminum. This half dollar is one of just two examples of the Judd-393 attribution known to exist, the other being the Simpson coin, earlier ex Kagin's January 1975 sale, among other auction appearances. Provenance: From the Mack C. Chase Collection. Earlier ex Empire Coin Company's fixed price sale of the Major Lenox R. Lohr Collection of patterns, 1961; Stack's sale of the R.E. Cox, Jr. Collection, April 1962, lot 2217; William Mitkoff, May 1974; James Bennett Pryor; our (Bowers and Merena's) sale of the James Bennett Pryor Collection, January 1996, lot 186; our (Bowers and Merena's) Rarities Sale of August 1998, lot 2051; Superior's September 19, 20, 21, 1999 Pre-Long Beach Sale, lot 1423; Superior's Pre-Long Beach Sale of February 2000, lot 855; Heritage's November 2003 Signature Sale, lot 11055; our (American Numismatic Rarities') Medio and Da Costa Gomez Collections sale, June 2004, lot 1674.
