1850 Gold Dollar. MS-65 (NGC). The 1850 is the second Philadelphia Mint issue in the Type I gold dollar series. Although a mintage of 481,953 pieces is respectable for the type, the 1850 is far scarcer in today's market than most other Philadelphia Mint gold dollars from the 1850s (the high mintage 1851, 1852 and 1853, of course, come readily to mind in this context). In Gem Mint State this issue is particularly elusive, and also underrated outside of the community of dedicated 19th century gold enthusiasts. Offered here is an impressive example with an otherwise razor sharp strike that softens just a bit at the central obverse high point. Fully lustrous and frosty with delightful color in golden-apricot. Astute bidders are sure to pursue this offering with vigor. NGC Census: 14; 4 finer (MS-66 finest). PCGS# 7509. NGC ID: 25BF.
