1838 Capped Bust Half Dollar. Reeded Edge. HALF DOL. GR-14. Rarity-3.

1838 Capped Bust Half Dollar. Reeded Edge. HALF DOL. GR-14. Rarity-3. MS-62 (NGC). Pale golden iridescence frames the peripheries of this generally brilliant and lustrous Condition Census example of the variety. GR-14 is an uncommon variety that employs the reverse die previously used for GR-13, now in a more advanced state with its principal crack considerably more pronounced and accompanied by several lumps. An additional crack develops from the rim to the S of STATES, though it is difficult to discern without magnification and good light. Graham describes the obverse in three collectible die states. In the Prime state there are no rim breaks. A later state develops a rim break outside star 13 spanning five dentils, while in the latest state an additional rim break develops outside stars 3 and 4. (Graham identifies these as stars 2 and 3 in his reference.) Of the three, Graham notes that the middle state is the easiest to locate, while the latest state, as seen here, is the most difficult. Though the reverse periphery is a bit soft, the overall appearance is that of an attractive and boldly struck example. The combination of Condition Census quality and the elusive late obverse die state adds considerably to its appeal for the specialist. Jim Koenings Commentary: This die marriage is rated R-3. It represents the second use of the reverse die previously employed for 1838 GR-13. The obverse has a rim break between the digit 8 in the date and star 13 that may span five dentils. Provenance: From the Jim Koenings Collection. PCGS# 6177. NGC ID: 24G5. Click here for certification details from NGC.
