1837 Capped Bust Half Dollar. Reeded Edge. 50 CENTS. GR-8. Rarity-4.

1837 Capped Bust Half Dollar. Reeded Edge. 50 CENTS. GR-8. Rarity-4. AU-58 (NGC). Pale golden peripheries frame otherwise brilliant centers on this Choice AU example of a scarce variety. Graham notes that the variety is most often encountered with shallow stars drawn toward the edges, and the present coin is no exception. Struck from a later state of the dies, this example displays areas of roughness in the field to the left of stars 7 through 9 that are characteristic of the variety. The most prominent die marker, however, is a spike extending upward from the top of Liberty's cap. While Graham assigned the variety a Rarity-4 rating in 2012, Koenings assigned it Rarity-3 in his 2024 census. Jim Koenings Commentary: My Newsletter #44 (12-15-22) reduced Graham's R-4 rating to R-3, which was retained in Newsletter #64 (12-15-24). Graham's 2012 Condition Census listed nine specimens ranging from MS-64 to AU-58. My 2024 census shows MS-64, MS-61, AU-58, AU-55, AU-53, EF-45, EF-45, EF-40, EF-40 and VF-35 reported by my Newsletter readers. Provenance: From the Jim Koenings Collection. PCGS# 6176. NGC ID: 24G4.
