1837 Capped Bust Half Dollar. Reeded Edge. 50 CENTS. GR-18. Rarity-1. MS-62 (PCGS). Even light gray patina is offset by antique-silver toning that clings to the devices and peripheries, while subtle rose-gold iridescence provides additional eye appeal. Subtle luster is noted on both sides, and the surfaces are quite smooth apart from some light scrapes at Liberty's jaw. GR-18 is easily identified by a reverse die crack extending from the upper left of the N to the berry and beyond. The reverse die is unique to this pairing, while the obverse was previously used for GR-17. In the late die state seen here, the obverse cracks present on GR-17 have become more pronounced and are joined by additional cracks, most notably one extending from star 8 through the cap and into Liberty's forehead. Jim Koenings Commentary: Although rated R-2 on 12-15-24, finding early, middle, and late die state examples of this die marriage will be a challenging task, especially in grades above EF-40.
