1837 Capped Bust Half Dollar. Reeded Edge. 50 CENTS. GR-13. Rarity-1. AU-58 (NGC). Golden-toned surfaces are framed by cobalt iridescence at the peripheries on this late die state example of GR-13. Despite the advanced state of the dies, the devices remain fairly bold, especially on the obverse. Both sides are smooth and attractive, appropriate for the Choice AU grade. The die cracks characteristic of the unique obverse and reverse dies used for this variety are light and unobtrusive. An ideal type coin for the collector who does not require a Mint State example. Jim Koenings Commentary: Koenings Newsletter #64 (12-15-24) rated 1837 GR-13 as R-2 (501 to 1,000 known). Additional research is needed for the 1837 die marriages, particularly for examples with weak or stretched obverse stars, unique die states, or significant reverse rotations yet to be discovered.
