Exceptionally Choice North West Company Token 1820 North West Company Token. Rulau-E Ore 2, W-9252. Copper. Fine-15 (PCGS). CAC. Pierced for suspension at 12 o'clock, as issued. Here is a perfectly smooth, medium brown specimen whose only "problem" is wear! Of course we can nitpick and point out the usual complement of surface marks or very minor corrosion seen on this piece, but it is far and away superior to most seen at this grade level. Wear is quite even on the obverse; the reverse, as usual, shows more advanced wear in its lower half than its upper, caused by years of wear against a Native American's chest. Here is one of the rare variants struck in copper rather than the more ubiquitous brass seen for this issue. The North West Company was one of the most significant companies involved in the North American fur trade during the 18th and 19th centuries. Founded in Montreal in 1779, it grew to be the biggest competitor to the Hudson Bay Company. This token was issued in 1820, valued at one beaver pelt. The following year the company merged with and into Hudson Bay Company. The tokens are believed to have been struck in Birmingham, England, by John Walker & Co for the Canadian and American market. Normally, these tokens are found very well worn and often corroded from having been unearthed in the region of the Lower Columbia River and Umpqua River valleys in Oregon. However, this example remains exceptionally well-composed and probably survived through different means. It brought $11,500 when we last offered it in January 2011, confirmation of its premium quality for the type. Provenance: From the Emerald Coast Collection. Earlier from our (Stack's) New York Americana Sale of January 2011, lot 6076, where it realized $11,500 in an NGC VF-20 BN holder. PCGS Population: 1; 7 finer (AU-58 finest). CAC Stickered Population: 1 in all grades. PCGS# 956. NGC ID: 2B6J. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
