1799 Draped Bust Silver Dollar. BB-166, B-9. Rarity-2. EF-40 (PCGS). Gold CAC. OGH. BB Die State V. A stunning example of both the type and BB number, both sides exhibit encircling halos of vivid golden-apricot, cobalt blue and pinkish-rose iridescence that are widest and most pronounced at left obverse. Soft pearl gray in the centers with impressively bold detail for a lightly circulated survivor from these dies. A combination of abundant mint frost and silky-smooth appearance further strengthens this coin's claim to an EF-45 to 45+ grade. Thoroughly PQ! The BB-166 die marriage is one of the most available of the 19 known pairings of the 1799-dated silver dollar issue. Notable for the so-called "apostrophe" die defect on the reverse after the second letter S in STATES, this variety has long been sought by variety specialists. The BB-166 was well used in commerce, and the bulk of all known specimens are at the VF and lower EF grade levels, and become scarce any finer. The offered coin is sure to attract strong bidding activity from astute early dollar enthusiasts and discerning type collectors. The BB Die State V is rare, as Q. David Bowers (2013) asserts that only 10-20% of 1799 BB-166 dollars are of this die state. Provenance: From the Emerald Coast Collection. Earlier ex Ellesmere Numismatics, January 8, 1988; Heritage's sale of the Hamilton Collection, Part II, September 2016 Long Beach Signature Auction, lot 5558. PCGS# 6878. NGC ID: 24X7.
