1788 Massachusetts Cent. Ryder 1-D, W-6190. Rarity-2+. Period After MASSACHUSETTS. AU-55 (PCGS). Wonderfully original surfaces exhibit streaks of light olive-gray to a base of dominant walnut-brown patina. Microscopic pits are natural to the planchet, but the flan is otherwise choice and presents as smooth in the absence of troublesome flaws. A few faint scratches at lower left reverse border also require magnification and intent to discern, the surfaces otherwise free of marks. There is scant denticulation around the borders, but the strike is well centered and all design elements remain sharply to fully rendered in the absence of all but a trace of high point friction. This is not an especially rare variety, and several are known in nice About Uncirculated and even Mint State grades. The discerning collector looking for a wholesome, original Ryder 1-D Massachusetts cent at the certified Choice AU level would be hard pressed to do much better than the coin offered here. Provenance: From the Emerald Coast Collection. PCGS# 948. NGC ID: 2B27. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
