1787 New Jersey Copper. Maris 55-m, W-5305. Rarity-4. No Sprig Above

1787 New Jersey Copper. Maris 55-m, W-5305. Rarity-4. No Sprig Above Plow, Second U/S in PLURIBUS. VF-30 (PCGS). 148.3 grains. SHI DS1. A notable major variety in the New Jersey series and the only use of Maris Reverse m, with the letter U in PLURIBUS over an erroneous S. Ideal glossy hard autumn-orange and golden-brown surfaces, as nice as could be hoped for at the middle reaches of the numismatic grading scale. There is a tiny edge bruise over the letter A in NOVA and another over the second letter E in CAESAREA, otherwise it's difficult for us to find a fault on this coin. A very old and meaningless curved scratch is noted at the base of the reverse. The U/S characteristic is bold to the naked eye. The date is interrupted by the rim below the numerals' midpoints. There may be some sharper examples of this scarce and interesting variety around, but there mustn't be many prettier ones. Provenance: From the Emerald Coast Collection. Earlier ex Robert Rhue at the 2004 ANA Convention; Clem Schettino; our (Stack's) sale of the Clem Schettino Collection of New Jersey Coppers, January 2010 New York Americana Sale, lot 4331. PCGS# 45425. NGC ID: 2B4S. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
