1787 Fugio Cent. Pointed Rays. Newman 12-X, W-6820. Rarity-2. STATES

1787 Fugio Cent. Pointed Rays. Newman 12-X, W-6820. Rarity-2. STATES UNITED, 4 Cinquefoils. AU-55 BN (NGC). Deep copper-brown patina with a hint of rose, the surfaces show subtle microgranularity, but are softly frosted in texture and present as fairly smooth during in-hand viewing. The strike is well centered, border denticulation just a bit thin at upper reverse, obverse with little to no denticulation anywhere, lower border softly struck with several letters in YOUR and BUSINESS indistinct, original planchet roughness seen in their stead. Minor flan flaws drift across both sides, a shallow fissure on the sundial noted, but the rest are small enough to blend into the overall fabric of the coin and escape detection by the unaided eye. Central motifs bold, sun and date likewise, FUGIO and rings readily appreciable despite some peripheral softness. Second only to Newman 13-X, Newman 12-X was among the most widely represented Fugio cent varieties in the Bank of New York Hoard, which included several hundred examples of this die pairing. PCGS# 883. NGC ID: 2B83. Click here for certification details from NGC.
