1787 Fugio Cent. Club Rays. Newman 4-E, W-6685. Rarity-3. Rounded

1787 Fugio Cent. Club Rays. Newman 4-E, W-6685. Rarity-3. Rounded Ends. VF-35 (PCGS). Newman Die State A/A, a scarcer attribution for the variety, with the bottom of the digit 8 in the date not yet filled by crumbling or chipping of the die. Richly original surfaces exhibit deep reddish-copper patina in the fields, devices lighter in golden-brown, the contrast between the two providing a nice circulated cameo appearance for both sides. There is a trace of microroughness, but the surfaces are generally hard and tight with only a few trivial, easily overlooked planchet fissures at upper and lower reverse, left and upper left obverse borders. The centers are a tad soft due to a confluence of strike weakness and wear, but centering is good with most major design elements bold and the overall design fully appreciable. A few relatively fresh marks are seen within the rings at 4 o'clock on the reverse, but they are of little concern given this coin's highly positive appearance at the Choice VF level. Though the Newman 4-E is a common variety in the Fugio series, pressure from Guide Book collectors seeking an example of the Clubs Rays, Rounded Ends design type means that attractive examples are scarce from a market availability standpoint. Most are either much more worn or with more extensive planchet flaws than this example, as well, which confirms the significance of its offering for quality-conscious bidders. Provenance: From the Emerald Coast Collection. PCGS# 904. NGC ID: AX5E. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
