1787 Connecticut Copper. Miller 15-R, W-2910. Rarity-7. Mailed Bust

1787 Connecticut Copper. Miller 15-R, W-2910. Rarity-7. Mailed Bust Left, CONNECT/IND, 1787/1788. VF Details--Planchet Flaw (PCGS). The eagerly sought Miller 15-R combination pairs the CONNECT type obverse with the odd 1787/1788 overdate reverse that, as a combination, is extremely rare. It is the rarest of the three Miller 15 obverse pairings, 15-F, 15-R, and 15-S. Our online auction archives show seven offerings for 15-R in the last five or so years, the additional example offered here about in the middle of the pack quality-wise. Obverse detail is generally bold, although the impression is off center to 6 o'clock with the denticulation at bottom beyond the flan and the bottom of the effigy soft. The reverse is softer overall, a meandering flan flaw from the border after the date into the center helping to explain the lack of strike detail in the center. Much of the seated figure is outlined, nonetheless, the words INDE ET are clear, and the date is complete with the blundered 7/8 feature readily evident upon closer examination. The planchet is rough, jagged and flawed at right obverse and reverse, this being the most obvious explanation for the PCGS qualifier. Dark, rough and granular overall, as well, but there are no sizeable post-production marks or other blemishes. Clearly attributable as a 15-R, this piece would serve as a fitting addition to many specialized Connecticut copper cabinets. PCGS# 802795. BASE PCGS# 352. NGC ID: 2B2S.
