1786 Connecticut Copper. Miller 5.3-N, W-2575. Rarity-2. Mailed Bust Left, Hercules Head. VF-30 (PCGS). The striking features on the hand-engraved effigy give this popular variety its name. The present example is generally deep tobacco brown with lighter rose color to the high points. Obverse well struck and bold apart from softness at the top of the effigy's head, impression drawn to 3 o'clock with the letters in CONNEC close to or lightly engaged by the border at right. Reverse is in the typical state for this pairing, the die clashed and swollen, yet with most major design elements still appreciable to boldly defined, strike trivially off center to 4 o'clock. Surfaces are microscopically rough, light carbon build up in areas, minor planchet fissures at the top of the effigy's head and in the right obverse and reverse field areas. A handsome piece when admired in-hand, and a respectable mid-grade example of this eagerly sought Guide Book type in the Connecticut series. Provenance: From the Emerald Coast Collection. Earlier from Heritage's FUN Signature Auction of January 2006, lot 429. PCGS# 334. NGC ID: 2B2H. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
