1786 Connecticut Copper. Miller 3-D.1, W-2510. Rarity-5-. Mailed Bust Right, Scholar's Head. VF-20 (PCGS). 173.1 grains. A nice, above average example of a challenging variety. The Scholar's Head is somewhat more available than the Noble Head that precedes it, but still quite scarce in its own right and most often found in low grades, with VG and Fine being typical. Very nice autumn-orange brown patina on both sides, the surfaces of which are microgranular, but not really disturbingly so. There are several small flan flaws on and around the shield on the reverse, but it is surprising how well these blend into the overall fabric of the coin during in-hand appreciation. A shallow, straight planchet clip at 1 o'clock relative to the obverse is also as made and virtually undetectable through the PCGS holder. Both sides are struck slightly off center, obverse a little more so on the right with clear signs of the die edge visible on the left. It would be difficult to do much better than this in an example of this Miller number, especially without spending considerably more for one of the (very) few higher-grade pieces known. A coin that offers tremendous value for the astute Connecticut copper enthusiast. Provenance: From the Emerald Coast Collection. Earlier ex Sylvester S. Crosby; later, John J. Ford, Jr.; our (Stack's) sale of the John J. Ford, Jr. Collection, Part IX, May 2005, lot 247. PCGS# 328. NGC ID: 2B2E. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
