1786 Connecticut Copper. Miller 1-A, W-2460. Rarity-4. Mailed Bust Right, Double Chin, ETLIB INDE. VF-20 (PCGS). 137.3 grains. An attractively original, well composed example that has the makings of an even EF grade for this challenging Miller number. Both sides are handsomely toned in warm autumn-orange brown with hints of olive engaging the design elements. The latter color is associated with a bit of old, trivial surface build up that is in no way detracting; there are no significant post-production marks, spots, or other blemishes. Essentially perfect centering and nice detail save for the central softness that plaques this variety. Some original planchet texture is seen in these areas, more so on the obverse. As usual, the flan was a little larger than the dies and a narrow lip of unstruck planchet is noted around some of the periphery, namely at upper obverse and left reverse. Overall detail is bold for a 1786 Miller 1-A, and when allowance is made for the strike, and consideration given for the choice surfaces, we suspect that others will have thoughts of EF for this desirable piece. This lot includes NGC cert ID #2040985-018 with a grade of VF-25 BN and Eric P. Newman Collection provenance from an earlier certification of this coin. Provenance: From the John Bolger Collection. Earlier ex Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society; Heritage's sale of the Eric P. Newman Collection, Part IV, May 2014, lot 30062. PCGS# 325. NGC ID: 2B2D.
