"1778-1779" (ca. 1780) Rhode Island Ship Medal. Betts-563, W-1740. Wreath Below Ship. Brass or Pinchbeck. AU-55 (PCGS). OGH. An outstanding example universally sharply struck on a hard, choice planchet. Plenty of original brassy-gold color remains, closely nestled among many of the design elements, and it is joined by richly original toning in deep olive-gray brown. The amount of detail seen here is remarkable for the type, especially in an example that carries a hint of rub to the high points. We've seen other certified AU-58s of this type that can't hold a candle to this one, so the old maxim "buy the 'coin' and not the holder" is definitely applicable here.
