Dorothy Heizer was a professional artist who attended the Penna Academy of Fine Arts, where she studied portraiture and sculpture. She was drawn to the creation of dolls, and completed her first historical portrait doll in 1924. These became her forte, though she did create a few contemporary dolls, like the one in this auction. Her basic materials were cloth, wire, and paint. She built the doll form of cloth over a wire armature, then covered it with a crepe cloth skin. Her work is known for its fine detail. She is recognized as the premier American doll artist and has received the highest honors.
